will be the united states of america. >> just getting a little update here. i'll tell you in a minute on florida, but welcome back to our special second hour of "the daily rundown." i'm chuck todd. let's see where we stand this hour and how the president night. the president put together a decisive victory last night. falling short of the votes he won in 2008 against john mccain. but he had 303. romney 206. florida's are still on the technically remain too close to call. miami-dade county is counting 20,000 absentee ballots they tell us. that's what they're counting right now. that's in miami-dade. that largest chunk of vote. if that breaks away the way they're going, it's impossible. i guess nothing's impossible. president obama is going to get that one too. it'll be 323 electoral votes when all is s if you will. i want to go to ohio because ohio was a big deal at the time. what was interesting here is where the margins were. it was all wasn't -- this was reduplicating the map. here's what the county map looksnow. i'll go to 2008. if anything, he did better in coal country as you

to lead in like ohio and florida. we'll pick up pennsylvania. we think we have a good shot at virginia, new hampshire, new mexico, nevada. that's the pathway to victory for john mccain. >> e see how all those states were blue? his confident predictions that john mccain was going to win all those states in 2008 were wrong in every single instance. they lost every single one of those states. even though it seemed like he was going to win all of those states the day before the election. he didn't say like he felt they were going to win. he said they have the polling data that showed they were going to win and they did not win in any of those states. this is just part of the way the game is played. it's just bluffing. and that is important context for understanding what's going on in the last four days of the campaign. there are patterns to how presidential elections end. some of the same stuff happens every four years. specifically, in 1992, the republican candidate was poppy bush. he went and campaigned in pennsylvania. and then the next day, he lost pennsylvania. the next election, 1996

in cincinnati, ohio. the president drew a crowd of 23,000 people this afternoon in hollywood, florida, after 24,000 people turned out last night to hear him in virginia. think about that. 24,000 in virginia last night. 23,000 people in florida today. in concord, new hampshire, this morning, when 14,000 people turned out to hear president obama, that was the largest crowd ever assembled for a political event in the entire state of new hampshire. in the entire history of the state of new hampshire. i realize new hampshire may not be big, but new hampshire is old. and this is the biggest political rally ever held in the state of new hampshire for the entire time that new hampshire has existed. we cannot be sure why more people are turning out to hear president obama today than are turning out to hear mitt romney. maybe it's just the power of incumbency. people want to hear a president speak no matter who the president is just because he's a president. governor romney's rallies have today have been significantly smaller than obama's. for the romney campaign, these are really quite good crowds. all

to nbc's first read, romney was in florida yesterday and virginia today. he'll also hit wisconsin, ohio, new hampshire, and colorado before the election. the president, this is an interesting map for him, he will be in wisconsin, where he is right now, with nevada, colorado, ohio, iowa, virginia, and florida. of course, they're sending their number one surrogates, the vp nominee, out where they're not going. is this the map, centered in ohio, virginia, and florida, is it still where the action is? >> it is for governor romney for sure. it's always been the case that governor romney needs to win florida, needs to win virginia, and pretty much needs to win ohio. even then he still needs to pick up another state somewhere along the way. you can see in his map that he's spending months of his time in florida, virginia, and ohio and a little bit of time in one of those other states that he thinks he might be able to get a pickup, whether that's wisconsin, whether that's colorado. those are the states he thinks he has the best chance. he's not spending time in iowa. he'll spend two different

monolithic voting group. vicky, i want to turn to you, the florida numbers are particularly fascinating approximate this. we were looking at a recent poll from the miami herald that looks at sort of obama and romney support. when you include cuban americans in the counting, president obama is leading by a slight margin, 51%. if, however, you look at it with cuban americans excluded from it, then all of a sudden president obama it leading at about 65%. obviousli obviously, that's an krags indication that you end up with national origin and other issues. >> i think florida is a microcosm for that diversity. in south florida, the miami area, you have a cuban american vote that's very republican. regardless of the generation. then you go into the i-4 corridor and you see the explosion of the puerto rican vote. interestingly enough, you have democrats but also a growing number of independents. then if you go even further, you have a smattering of mexican americans. what is the trend for the future there. it's not mexican americans in texas. it's going to be puerto ricans and cuban americans.
